Rani Mukherjee is an Indian film actress born on 21 March 1978 in Mumbai to the Mukherjee-Samarth family.Her father, Ram Mukherjee is a former film director and one of the founders of Filmalaya Studios. Her mother, Krishna Mukherjee, is a former playback singer. Her elder brother, Raja Mukherjee, is a film producer and director. Her maternal aunt, Debashree Roy, is a Bengali film actress and her paternal cousin, Kajol, is a Hindi film actress and her contemporary. Another paternal cousin, Ayan Mukherjee is a scriptwriter and film director.

            Her zodiac sign is Pisces, She is five feet two inches tall, Her light brown eyes and husky voice gives her unique personality among the Indian heroines She feels comfortable in Jeans and tops but at the same time the Indian dress like the saris and from the western collection the gowns also attracts her. She likes most the fish preparations made by her mother; she is not on dieting but avoids cold drinks and heavy food items. She loves the food prepared at home like the plain roti, dal and salads. Her favorite hobby is dancing and recently she is learning the Odissi dance form of Indian Dance.

Rani Mukherjee is very bold and has a very strong personality, many times the rumor spread about her relationship with her co-stars and other celebrities but she was bold enough to deny each of the news. Till now she came out of such type of rumors scot-free. She is very emotional about her personal relationships. Her prized possession is the diamond ring which was presented to her by her father. Her opinion about the jewellery and other valuable is that it is better to have a room full of teddy bears instead of keeping the jewellery and other valuables in locker of the bank. Her favorite cartoon characters are Archie and Donald Duck, her favorite film is Titanic. Rani Mukherjee is a very homely girl at her heart; she is single till date and has no plans to marry in the near future. She claims that she is a simple Bengali girl at home and not allowed to act like a star there; many times she gets the yelling from her mother and after the marriage she would opt for a nice and quite life of a housewife.

Mukherji was schooled at Maneckji Cooper High School in Juhu, and graduated from SNDT Women's University in the field of Home Science. She is a trained Odissi dancer and began learning the dance form while in the tenth grade. As part of an annual tradition, the Mukherjee family celebrates the festival of Durga Puja at the suburban neighbourhood of Santacruz every year. Mukerji, a practising Hindu, takes part in the festivities with her entire family.

                       At the age of fourteen, Mukerji experimented with acting by portraying a supporting role in her father's Bengali language film Biyer Phool (1992). The film starred Prosenjit and Indrani Haldar in lead roles and narrates the story of two sisters; Mukerji played the younger sibling of Haldar's character. In 1994, director Salim Khan approached her to play the lead female role in his directorial, Aa Gale Lag Jaa. Her father disapproved of a full-time career in film at such a young age and hence, she turned down the offer. When Khan approached her with another film offer (to play the protagonist of the social drama Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat), Mukherji accepted the role due to her mother's insistence that she pursue acting on an experimental basis.Before she began work on the film, Mukherji trained at Roshan Taneja's acting institute.

Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat (1997), which tells the story of a rape victim (played by Mukerji) who is forced to marry her rapist, was a critical and commercial failure. Mukerji's performance was praised, and she won a special recognition trophy at the annual Screen Awards ceremony. Following the film's failure, Mukerji returned to college to complete her education. However, inspired by her cousin Kajol's success in Bollywood, she decided to pursue a full-time career in film.

Her second film role was opposite Aamir Khan in Vikram Bhatt's box office hit Ghulam (1998). Though her role in the film was small, the song "Aati Kya Khandala" earned her widespread recognition. Due to Mukerji's broken voice texture, Bhatt hired a dubbing artist with a much higher pitched voice to dub for her lines; when asked if the director's decision to not use her voice in the film affected her, she said that her voice was dubbed as it "did not suit the character".

               Later that year, Karan Johar noticed Mukerji's performance in Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat and cast her opposite Shahrukh Khan and her cousin, Kajol, in his big-budget directorial debut Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. The role was originally written for Twinkle Khanna, who turned down the offer, following which Johar approached several leading actresses before casting Mukerji for the role. Initially Johar too wanted a dubbing artist to dub for Mukerji's lines in the film, but she improved her diction and eventually dubbed for her own lines. She portrayed Tina Malhotra, a college student who is in a relationship with Khan's character. Writing for India Today, film critic Nandita Chowdhury considered Mukerji to be the scene-stealer and added, "Oozing oomph from every pore, she proves herself an actress whose time has come."Kuch Kuch Hota Hai proved a breakthrough for Mukerji; it emerged as a blockbuster in India and abroad, with an adjusted worldwide gross of 1.82 billion (US$31 million), and won eight Filmfare Awards, including a Best Supporting Actress trophy for Mukerji.

       She was flooded with offers after this success. In 2002 she delivered the biggest hit Saathiya opposite Vivek Oberoi which was a blockbuster.In 2004 her performance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Black was critically acclaimed by all the critics. After giving whole lot of excellent performance her latest film No One Killed Jessica (2011) made roars at the box office.Presently she is working for Reema Kagti's untitled project. Mukerji changed the English transliteration of her surname from Mukherjee to Mukerji several years ago.

Rani often dons clothes designed by Sabyasachi Dutta. She loves to wear saris and is seen in lovely draped saris in most of the occasions. Unfortunately, her western off screen attire has not been the talk of the town.Regarding her marriage she says that she would prefer a love marriage which is arranged with the consent of her parents and she is yet to find the Prince charming of her dreams. She is very touchy about her parental house in Kolkata, she says that if allowed or compelled she would not sell the parental house at any cost.
